Uncommitted 2022 LB David Bailey Leads Talented Mater Dei

Mater Dei has always been a hotbed of college football talent. Over a dozen alumni have reached the pinnacle of the sport – the NFL. 2022 LB David Bailey could be next.

Bailey is one of three Monarchs among the top five recruits in the state of California. At the moment, Bailey is committed only to winning another Trinity League title and, potentially, a state championship.

One thing is for certain. Bailey will have plenty of choices when it comes time to make his college decision. He has over a dozen offers from some of the biggest programs in FBS including Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma.

It appears that a few schools in Bailey’s home state may have the inside track.

Scouting Report

Bailey popped up on the radar long before he was a starter for Mater Dei and a four-star linebacker according to most recruiting outlets. He possesses a unique blend of size and speed that is not all that common among players at his position.

Listed around 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds for most of his high school career at Mater Dei, Bailey is pushing 6-4 and weighs closer to 225 than 220. He is blessed with tremendous speed and has an explosive first step.

It’s these qualities that make Bailey an elite edge pass rusher. It’s one of the most coveted positions on the field these days in the modern era of the spread offense. Getting to the quarterback and disrupting offenses is what defense is all about and Bailey’s game is suited to just that. You can see for yourself in Bailey’s 2022 highlights.

Not only can Bailey play at the line of scrimmage and rush the passer, he is equally capable defending the run and dropping into pass coverage. He can cover in space and he’s a strong open field tackler.

The upside is that Bailey is a relatively new to football. He is still scratching the surface of his athletic ability. With a college-ready body and his skill set, Bailey will be a great addition to whatever program he chooses.

College Visits

Bailey visited Cal over the weekend of June 11-12 and he will visit two more Pac-12 programs that would love to have him. The Mater Dei star will be on campus at Oregon State on June 18 and then at Stanford on June 24. He holds offers from all three schools.

Bailey’s Teammates

Bailey isn’t the only FBS talent on the Mater Dei roster. That is usually the case for the Monarchs who, as mentioned, have three of the top five recruits in the Class of 2022.

Domani Jackson (6-1, 185) starts at corner for Mater Dei and is the No. 1-ranked prospect in the state. He is already committed to USC. You can see Jackson’s potential in his sophomore season highlights below.
